Here’s to 2014! I hope all of you had a fantastic holiday
and your New Year is off to a great start! Now that we’ve settled into 2014
(that’s so hard to say!), and we’re getting back to normal schedules (excluding
weather closings), what are your resolutions, and how many have you kept so far?
Notice that I’m being positive with my question. All I’ve
heard this past week is how many resolutions have you broken? Phrased like that
makes failure acceptable. My friends say, “Okay, I’ve broken
that one, I knew I couldn’t do it.” Or, “I don’t make resolutions, never keep
them anyway.” So, I’ll ask again—how many of your resolutions are still going
strong?
Before you answer that question, let’s look at the
definition of resolution. Being a writer, I look for words and expressions to avoid
repetition. A very quick way and by no means the best way is to ‘right-click’
on the selected word and pull up the synonym list. So for resolution is this
list: resolve, determination, steadfastness, tenacity, firmness, perseverance,
doggedness, and, finally, purpose.
New Year’s Steadfastness or, maybe, New Year’s Perseverance
or any of the other words doesn’t cut it for me. So let’s peel back a layer of
the onion. The verb form of the word is ‘resolve.’ So checking the synonym list
I found the same list as resolution but one extra – decide.
New Year’s Decisions! How I like the sound of that. A resolution
is simply a decision, and you don’t need a special time of year to make a
decision. A resolution can be a temporary or long lasting act but a decision
can be life changing.
But back to the question, for me, I’ve decided --
1. to eat healthier. (Losing weight will be an added bonus)!
2. to organize my life. (Avoiding the wild goose chase when
I’ve misplaced something will definitely be less stressful.)
3. to be in control of my decisions for 2014 by the grace of
God and with my husband’s blessings!
So forget about those New Year’s resolutions, what decisions
have you made to change your life for the better?
